How I became Me
MEDIA
MOVIES
I would definitely consider myself to be a big cinephile. My mom and I used to watch movies growing up as something to bond over and it always just stuck with me. I love all genres of movies and feel like I've seen so many throughout my life.
MUSIC
I love music because I can use it for everything. I use it as background because I can't stand a quiet room. I can create a playlist that would best describe my feelings or personality. I use music for a lot of things, but I can never choose a favorite song. It's just impossible.
DISNEY
SOCIAL MEDIA
Social media I wouldn't say is an essential part of my life, but it is something that I am connected to. I find it fascinating how much we communicate through social media and how it has become such an integral part of our daily lives. I will admit however, I can be known to scroll through TikTok for hours.
MEMORIES
CHRISTMAS MORNINGS
Ever since I was a little girl, Christmas has always been a really big holiday for me. One memory in particular are Christmas mornings. Every Christmas, to this day, we do these family brunches where everyone comes over to our house to eat and we open presents and watch the morning parades. I've always just loved the feeling of being around everyone.
PURPLE REIGN
The event Purple Reign last spring semester was a huge event for me. It didn't really seem like it at the time, but it was a really memorable day. I was bonding with a couple friends I had just met and now they're some of my closets friends. I had recently did an article about a band that was performing and I got to see them perform live in person. Then Lovelytheband played, whom I had never really heard of before, and now they're one of my favorite bands. Everything just really came together that day.
JOINING BLUESTONE
During my freshman year, I joined our school's yearbook and it was one of my best decisions. Going around to interview people for stories really got me out of my comfort shell and to explore the campus. I also ended up meeting a lot of really cool people.
SPEAKING AT MY HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION
This was a very pivotal moment in my life. I don't typically brag about it much, but when I received this award when graduating high school, I was ecstatic. I had felt like all of my hard-work was paying off and I was getting the recognition that I deserved.
ALWAYS LAUGHING
EDUCATION AND TEACHERS
MR. INGRAHAM
Mr. Ingraham was one of my high school English teachers who really saw potential in me. He always insisted that I go the extra mile and so I did. Fun fact: I had actually talked to Mr. Ingraham about my college decisions and he told me that going to an HBCU would be nice but it'd be easy. But going to a PWI as a woman of color would make it stand out much more in where I wanted to go.
I've always taken my academic life pretty seriously. From a young age, I've been a really good student and I take pride in that. My grades, work, and everything academic has always been a big part of myself and I'm really proud of where it's taken me and where I'm still continuing to go.
Sean McCarthy
Sean was one of my WRTC intro teachers during my freshman year and I absolutely loved his class. Sean helped me create this really cool project that I'm hoping to continue later in the year. He was really just a great professor.
DREAMS, GOALS, LINGERING QUESTIONS
COMPLETING COLLEGE
STUDYING ABROAD IN LONDON
I don't know when it really became a "thing" but one of the big things that I want to do before graduating college is to be able to study abroad in London for a semester. Besides the U.S., London is an enormous media outlet that I would love to be able to study in person
.
DEBATING WHETHER OR NOT I WANT TO OBTAIN MY MASTER'S
So there's this running joke between my mom and I that I'm the type of person to go above the above and beyond and getting my master's is part of that joke because I am already a double major
KNOWING THAT I WANT TO PURSUE A CAREER IN JOURNALISM JUST NOT KNOWING WHERE I WANT TO GO WITH IT
One of the bigger things that I've come to know about myself is that I really want to do something in journalism when I graduate. What exactly, that's a different question. I've thought out PR, content management, writing for a magazine/newspaper, etc. I just haven't made up my mind yet.
Traveling
FAMILY/FRIENDS
I am a huge family person! I love being around my family and doing events and activities. Sure, they do become a little irritating and nosy, but that's what family is for and I don't think that I'd be here without them.
One person that I have to shout out however is my mom. My mom is probably one of the most important people in my life. I love her so much. Besides friends, she's probably one of the closest people to me. Fun fact: In the family we're even known as the "twins" because of how much we look alike.
Friends are also really important. Personally, I like to have a few close friends around me. Overall I would say that I'm pretty friendly, so when it comes to meeting new people, it isn't too bad. I love my best friends though. We're like a unit, always together and bouncing off of each other's energy. It's always a good time and I know that they're always going to be there for me too.
HOBBIES
ART
I've been drawing or doing some type of art for as long as I can remember. I always like to paint, doodle, or just do something with my hands, so I guess I'm pretty crafty. Beyond myself, I really like pop art, I've always thought that it was pretty interesting. Street art has always been pretty interesting, mainly art that's unconventional and original really sparks an interest in me.
SOCCER
JOURNALING
Journaling, in a way, is like my coping mechanism. I have plenty of journals, some that I've never filled and just bought a new one. I use it to jot down random thoughts, use it as a therapy book, doodles, lists, etc.
