Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Definition
A nervous system disease that weakens muscles and impacts physical function.
Pathophysiology
There is loss of motor neurons in the spinal ventral horns, most brainstem motor nuclei and motor cortex. Histology shows ubiquinated inclusions in lower motor neurons and axonal swellings that are thought to contain disarrayed neurofilaments
Nursing Interventions
Encourage the patient to engage in activities that reduces stress like yoga
Recommend healthy diet
Promote measures to maintain adequate airway.
Nursing diagnosis
Impaired mobility
Impaired communication
Respiratory failure
Causes
Cause is unknown
Risk factors
Smoking
Environmental toxins exposure
Poor diet and nutrition
Clinical manifestations
muscle weakness
Fatigue
Drooling
Diagnostic test
Electromyography
Nerve conduction study
