STEADI Article Review
Moiz 2017
Purpose: "Estimate the ability of the ABC-H scale to discriminate between fallers and non-fallers and to examine its predictive validity for prospective falls"
-
-
Significant differences between fallers and non-fallers due to 1. number of comorbidities, 2. number of medications, 3. any falls in the previous year, 4. two falls in the previous year
-
-
-
Gillespie
My Opinion: Assessment and Intervention programs currently reduce the rate of falls, but NOT the risk of falls. This implies that our assessments (and possibly treatments) are insufficient.
-
Purpose: "Assess the effects of interventions designed to reduce the incidence of falls in older people living in the community"
-
-
-
Needs/recommendations
-
-
-
My opinion: educate pts what the definition of a "fall" is and gain trust to allow them to report falls
Vincenzo
Purpose: "Conduct fall risk screenings and assessments using the STEADI and explore older adults' (1) recall of their fall risk and prevention recommendations, (2) perceptions of factors related to adherence to recommendations for fall prevention, and (3) perceptions of what health care providers can do to facilitate participation in fall prevention activities 6 months after voluntarily attending a community fall risk assessment event."
In general, higher fall risks correlate with older age, increased height, higher weight, and more meds
Reason for participation
-
-
desire to avoid injury, stay active, and remain independent
-
Results
pts believe that health care professionals can help older adults overcome barriers to adhering to fall prevention recommendations
participants think the assessment provided an opportunity to learn about their risk and what they can do to prevent falls
Suggestion that phone calls from the provider can help participants to remember to practice fall prevention behaviors
-
suggestion that providers stress the importance of appropriate fit of assistive devices and appropriate use of them
-
Bower 2015
Purpose: "Assess psychometric properties of a revised version of Fear of Falling Questionnaire in older adults recovering from a hip fracture"
-
-
-
Lusardi
Purpose: "2 aims: (1) to evaluate the predictive ability of fall risk assessment tools for community-dwelling older adults by calculating and comparing PoTP values, and (2) to explore usefulness of cumulative PoTP using test results from multiple measures"
Crow 2021
Purpose: "Evaluate if using a modified version of the STEADI algorithm's ability to predict the risk for future cognitive impairment in older adults without cognitive impairment at baseline using 8 years of survey data"
Older adults with increased fall risk have a higher risk of developing future cognitive decline. This can be detected by STEADI
Loonlawong 2022
Purpose: "Determine the predictive validity of the two-step sequential fall risk screening algorithm of the STEADI program for Thai elderly in the community. In addition, to predict validity of each component aforementioned, we explored possible combinations of the components to maximize screening efficiency."

Recommendations
-
"Moderate risk" should encompass those who answer "yes" to any questions, but have NOT had a fall

-
Afridi 2015
Purpose: "Determine the relationship between fall, fear, and balance in older populations"
Even with no history of fall, many older adults may have low confidence levels and physical functioning levels according to the ABC scale
