Japan
Japan was never conquered, but emulated China nonetheless
In 646 CE, Japan began Taika Reforms, an attempt to restructure the government around Chinese models
Introduced Chinese script, bureaucracy, and equal field system based on Chinese policy where the government assigned land to families based on their ability to work it and produce yield
Eventually Japan realized that their attempt to model China wouldn't work, and by the 10th century they abandoned it
Thus, Japan created the office of Shogun, a military dictator who ruled via local warrior leaders called bushi
This led to civil war in the 15th century which resulted in the destruction of the capital and the Shogunate. Power fell entirely into the feudal system resulting in 300 feudal kingdoms in Japan, protected by samurai who followed a code (bushido) led by local warlords called daimyos
