Differential diagnosis
Constipation
Bowel obstruction
Uterine fibroids
Ascites secondary to cirrhosis of liver or heart failure
Adenomyosis
Bowel/gastric cancer
IBS/IBD
Endometriosis/Ovarian cyst rupture/torsion
Types of ovarian cancer
Serous (75-80% of cases)
Mucinous
Endometrioid
Clear cell
Transitional cell
Squamous
Diagnosis in primary care
If examination reveals ascites/pelvic/abdominal mass refer woman urgently to gynaecology USS pathyway
If examination normal measure CA125
If CA125 raised refer for USS
of abdomen and pelvis
If USS suggestive of ovarian
cancer refer USoC to gynaecology
If CA125 is normal or raised with normal USS consider other causes for symptoms or raised CA125
