Specialized cells
Sperm cells:
- They have a head, tail and a nucleus
- Their body contains mitochondria
- The mitochondria provides energy for the sperm cell to be able to move
- The head is shaped in a way where it is able to penetrate through the egg cell when fertilisation occurs
- The tail helps the sperm cell to move
Red blood cells:
- Red blood cells carry oxygen
- They do not have a nucleus so that they are able to carry as much oxygen as possible
- They have a biconcave shape which helps to increase their surface area
- They also contain haemoglobin which gives them the red pigment, it also helps to bind to the oxygen
Egg cells:
- Egg cells have a large surface area to be able to facilitate the growth of an embryo
- The egg cell also hardens once a sperm cell has penetrated through the egg cell to make sure that multiple sperm cells do not develop into an embryo
-
Mitochondria
- Mitochondria is found in almost all cells
- Mitochondria helps to provide energy needed for respiration
- Mitochondria contain an inner and outer membrane which is similar to the structure of chloroplast
Cell structure
Animal cells
- Cell membrane
- Cytoplasm
- Nucleus
- Ribosome
- Mitochondria
Plant cells
- Cell Wall
- Vacuole
- Nucleus
- Cell Membrane
- Chloroplast
Bacterial cells
- Most bacterial cells have flagellum, cytoplasm, ribosomes and a cell membrane
- They do not have a nucleus
- Their genes are stored in the cytoplasm
- They also have plasma DNA and chromosomes
Variation
- All people look different to each other because everyone has half the number of chromosomes from each parent.
- This means that half the DNA of each parent are inherited into the offspring
Chloroplast
- Chloroplast contains an inner and outer membrane
- Within Chloroplast there is chlorophyll
- Chlorophyll helps to absorb sunlight which is then used for the synthesis of food
- Chlorophyll gives the green pigment in leaves
-
Meiosis
- Meiosis is a type of cell division which produces 4 daughter cells which are genetically varied from each other
- The daughter cells will have half the number of chromosomes as their parent cells
- Meiosis is used in sexual reproduction
