The whole purpose of a menu is to offer an indirect service to the consumer and allow them the chance to decide what they want, this also helps prevent any miscommunication.
When it comes to a Non-direct service a menu design is vital to hold as much information that the customer may need in order to be satisfied without overloading them with too much information.

The design should take into consideration of the design results and how everything comes together as a complete design.
How the design will age over time and whether the design will uphold the same values of a long period of time.
Consumer Knowledge
The Menu design should be simple enough so that anyone can understand and be able to get the information they need of it.

Commonly there may be different sections of a menu that are desinged for different age groups with a food section that caters for those differences.
Kids menu, housing a smaller portion size of selected food/drink items at a smaller price.
How to incoorprite different target audiences into the desings and what different age groups would expect and value from such differences.
Layout & Position
When it comes to the layout and positioning of a design it's crucial that the right time is dedicated to this part of the design process as its one of the main key elements that going into a design.
The layout is essentially where everything will be place on a given format, it establishes a predetermined arrangement for items such as image, text and style on a page, it's important that this should be done properly to ensure the best appearance as well as use of space.
Having a good layout goes a long way and helps the overall appearance and relationships between the graphic elements to achieve a good flow and ensure the context of the design material is easily readable as well as making sure smooth eye movement across the design for maximum effectiveness or impact.
Different types of positioning can have different overall effects on the feel given of by the design.

True likeness is very important when presenting the consumer with food options, as it gives the consumer a chance to see what their order may potentailly look like, this will also help prevent confusion and uphold satisfaction levels.
Pictures help show the customer what they're ordering, it also helps to ensure more satisfaction for the customer.

Pricing
How the products are priced, based on the value of the product and how the consumer values the product.

If the qauntity has a changing factor in cost, this should be clearly displayed to the consumer.
Time based information
certain menus will have a selected set of food chioces/drinks for an allocted set time during the day.
Special food items or promotional products may also be displayed on the menu for a period of time, this can range from new menu features to limited time only food and or products.
Normally depending on the time and menu chioce, the food items may greatly differe from the regular menu selection, for example; A breakfast menu will have many chioces of breakfast foods to choose from, which can only be ordered during the allocated time for breakfast.
Food itmes could also show discounted prices for a limited time, during a seasnol sale or for other food promotions, some food items may also be included as part of a meal deal to encurage customers to get more value for their money.

The word font refers to a set of printable or displayable typography or text characters in a specific style and size. Font styles are used in both print and digital text.

There are many different format layouts, that would all have different design advantages and disadvantages.
Paper formats can range from A1 to A6 or higher, there are many different standardised formats that are used and for a multitude of purposes.
