CONSCIOUSNESS PART 2
Stages of sleeps
a) Non-REM Stage One (N1)- light sleepMay experiences:
- hypnagogic images- vivid visual events (bits and pieces of what eventually become dreams but are most often seen as flashes of light
- hypnic jerk - knees, legs or whole-body jerks.
b) Non-REM Stage One (N2)- body temperature drops, heart rate slows, breathing irregular. EEG show sign of sleep spindles ( brief burst of activity only lasting a second or two)
c)Non-REM Stage One (N3)- delta waves pronounced
- Deep sleep( when 50% of waves are delta waves)
- The growth hormone are released and reach their peak at this state.
- the body functions drop to the lowest
REM Sleep
-REM sleep is paradoxical sleep (high level of brain activity).
- REM rebound (increased amounts of REM sleep after being
deprived of REM sleep on earlier nights)

Common Sleep disorders
Imsomnia
-Having problems falling or staying asleep
- 10% until 15% of adults
- it’s becomes worse with sleeping pills and alcohol
- causes : stress,depression,anxiety,health problems
Narcolepsy
- Urge to fall asleep - may occur while talking or standing up
- 1 in 200 peoples
- cataplexy ( the sudden loss of muscle tone)
- possible reason : flu virus during third trimester
Sleep apnea
- failure to breath when sleep ( just like snoring while sleeping)
- 1 in 20 people
- mostly overweight men (snoring) : can occur 400 times per night
Types of sleep
REM sleep (rapid eye movement) - Active type of sleep when most of a person's dreaming takes place; the movement of the person's is very minimal.
Non-Rem Sleep Much deeper, more restful kind of sleep; the person's body is free to move around.
Sleep Disorders
Two types of sleep disorders
• Nightmares - bad dreams occurring during REM sleep.
• REM behavior disorder - a rare disorder in which the mechanism that blocks the movement of the voluntary muscles fails, allowing the person to thrash around and even get up and act out nightmares.
Brain waves patterns
Electroencephalograph (EEG) - allows scientists to see the brain wave activity as a person passes through the various stages of sleep and to determine what type of sleep the person has entered.
- Alpha Waves- brain waves that indicate a state of relaxation.
- Theta Waves- brain waves indicating the early stages of sleep/light sleep
- Delta Waves- long, slow waves that indicate the deepest stage of sleep.
REM sleep
-REM sleep is paradoxical sleep (high level of brain activity).
-If wakened during REM sleep, almost always report a dream.
-REM rebound - increased amounts of REM sleep after being deprived of REM sleep on earlier nights.
