Calm & Effective Aliveness at Work
Polyvagal theory (Stephen Porges)
Ventral vagal Social Engagement (Safe state)
Growth & expansion
Sympathetic State --> high energy state, not sustainable for long periods of time
Fight (Anger/aggression) --> Bully, Narcissist, Sociopath
Flight (busy bee, anxiety) --> panic disorder, mood disorder, ADHD, OCD
Dorsal Vagal Freeze --> low energy state, overwhelm, paralysis, CFS, pain
Isolates, indecisive --> Overwhelm, depression, dissociation, CFS
Fawn state --> includes sympathetic and freeze states, "process of abandoning self for the purpose of attending to the needs of others" Dr A Schwartz
Flatters, angle of mercy --> Co-dependent, victim
Can look very much like tend-and-befriend, a healthy 'affiliation' response to stress
Survival needs (Gabor Maté)
Attachment
Not negotiable for survival
Authenticity
being connected to ourselves (gut feeling), knowing what we feel and being able to act on it
In the wild critical for survival, in today's world it often becomes a threat to attachment relationships (attachment will win every time over authenticity)
e.g. child gets angry because she was not allowed the cookie before dinner. Parent can't handle anger and sends message "Good kids don't get angry"; child gets message "angry kids don't get loved" (parents look at you with an angry face and speak in a harsh voice); as a child you still need to stay attached, so you need to suppress authenticity
We loose connection to ourselves and our gut feelings (the very dynamic that is essential to human survival in a natural setting now becomes a threat to our survival in a modern setting --> where staying authentic is a threat to attachment!
Organisations are created, made of, driven by people
healthy attachment & authenticity --> leadership style, communication, expectation of others, trust
Temperature (culture) of the organisation
Values
Nature & Nurture
DNA blueprint
Attachment & authenticity
We are wired for social interaction, in the wild even an adult would not survive without community
Need for belonging
