Pre-Spanish influence: The region that is now Catalonia, was controled by the Roman empire, and before that was habited by the Iberians. After the fall of the western Roman Empire, the landzone was controled by the Visigoths, and later by the muslims. Later in 801, the Frankish empire took control of the area and created a self-governing counties. These counties came under the rule of the counts of Barcelona, and there was used for the first time, the term "Catalonia".
