Ways to Combat Coastal Erosion
Tetrapods
Pros: Tetrapods are precasted, which means they can be quickly placed and also cheaply made.
Cons: You need loads of these to see a big impact and also these have tiny gaps which allow water to come through. And they also don't prevent longshore drift
Rock Armours
Pros: Prevents the destructive waves from further eroding into the land, creating cliffs and destroying settlements.
Cons: Doesn't prevent longshore drift
Gabions
Pros;
Very Cost Effective due to easy access to materials
Cons:
Destroys the natural look of the beach
Groynes
Pros:
Prevents longshore drift, attractive to tourists
Cons: Expensive to create and maintain
Offshore reefs
Pros: Slows down the speeds and fetch of the destructive waves, making them more constructive.
Cons: Longshore drift waves can come at an angle through the gaps and cause further erosion.
