For the birds that do build nests, there is one main goal: to keep their eggs and chicks safe. Many birds also make their nests in tree hollows, including parrots.
Birds may sleep in abandoned nest boxes, in old buildings, nestled in shrubs or in a cavity in a tree. Some birds, like ducks and other waterfowl, sleep near the edge of the water and may even sleep standing on one leg with the other leg held against the body. Many birds sleep on a tree branch in a protected area.
Class activity: Teacher shows learners pictures of which bird can run fast but not fly and discuss reasons
The ostrich can run very fast it has long legs and sharp hard toe nails good for digging holes but is way to heavy to fly.
Meet the emu, the second-largest bird in the world after the ostrich. Emus can't fly but can run very fast. An emu's small, palm-size wings are hidden under a mound of feathers and help it balance as it runs at speeds up to 30 miles per hour.
