Without political sectors amongst Spectrum Health, higher ups would not be able to vote on policies to support funding for research of new technology.
The role of politics in healthcare makes organizations able to streamline new technology by approving policies and making a plan to use the new technology.
Economic
The economic impact on new technology could relate to higher healthcare cost. The total impact on technology and healthcare cost is how much the organization paid upfront for the new technology and how much the machine cost to run daily.
Physician's in the hospital setting do not know the cost of the test they order. In which, there is a communication barrier with admissions who are concerns about the cost and revenue amongst a patient and the physician who is concerned about the patients health and safety.
Legal
With the use of new technology there is always a concern that there could be a data breach amongst patient infomration.
Amongst new technology in healthcare comes robots and understanding artificial intelligence. Hospitals have to insure that they can provide patients safety while providing them with the assistance needed. There will be legal documents the patient has to sign along the way to clarify their bill of rights and the use of technology.
Environmental
The biggest challenges throughout Spectrum Health and hospitals across America is reducing and managing waste. Hospitals are putting GPS trackers to promote smart waste management. The GPS tracker will be able to track data on inventory, discarded materials and where waste was disposed of.
Technological
There are many technological challenges in a healthcare organization, One of the biggest ones is keeping up with old technology. With this being said, there is still areas of medicine that out of date technology which can lead to a security error of patient health information.
The overall learning of new medical technology can be a big challenge throughout healthcare. Without the proper education of new technology it can lead to more errors or malpractice.
Socioeconomic
Telemedicine has became a new way of healthcare since before the covid-19 pandemic. This form is technology is making disparities between the upper and lower socioeconomic class. This being, individuals that want to do a telemedicine visit with a practitioner have to have a working computer and wifi capabilities. Some individuals in the lower class may not have those resources.
Ethical Challenges
Economic
In Family Medicine practice at Spectrum Health, an ethical challenge that is often seen is not displaying the price of procedures prior to them being performed. There is a catalog on the main website with very vague information. This is an ethical concern in regards to a patients finances and not informed consent.
The main ethical concern with economic challenges in healthcare is leaving patients with financial constraints after a hospital stay. A patients health should come first before trying to make money. Often times at Spectrum Health employees are seeing that patients are becoming less of a focus rather than the money produced.
Socioeconomic
In healthcare socioeconomic status should not matter but in most hospitals it does. Based on a patients social and economic status it determines their health, healthcare access and the healthcare outcomes.
Legal
One of the most common legal concerns in healthcare is patient privacy and confidentiality this leading to one of the most common legal and ethical challenges.
One of the biggest challenges in Spectrum Health is protecting employees rights. More common lately, employees feel that the company will not back them up legally if there would be an issue arise.
Political
Politics should never be involved in a patients health. In the last two years since the COVID-19 pandemic there have been many political challenges along the way.
The main political ethical challenges in healthcare have to include not adhering to autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice.
Environmental
The main environmental concerns in healthcare have to do with the waste prosperities and disposing of waste correctly. With concerns arising about disposal, storage, recycling and responsibility. With this, there has been an increase of 30% in the last decade in greenhouse gas emissions related to healthcare facilities.
Spectrum health has a whole team working against environmental concerns across the company. With being in the healthcare field, there is a lot of waste. On an average 10 hour day I go through on average a 50 pairs of gloves that end up in a landfill each day.
Technological
The main ethical concern in Spectrum health is misuse of personal information. In healthcare there has to be a release of information form signed to avoid breaking HIPPA guidelines. Working in a healthcare facility I often times see coworkers and patients breaking HIPPA compliance.
Having good ethics goes hand and hand with working in healthcare. Technology can often times test an employees ethics by a simple search of another employees personal protected healthcare information.
