By 1951, there were issues within the Labour Party. Bevan resigned in 1951, along with Wilson (both big hitters within the party), because Attlee wanted to introduce prescription, dentist, and optician charges. This was in part to create money for defence spending, as the UK was then involved in a number of military operations, including the Korean War. The nationalisation of steel was unpopular, and gave the opposition easy ammunition, Attlee himself along with his cabinet were quite old and this was in contrast with the relatively young and dynamic Conservative Party, and Labour (through little fault of their own) began to be seen as the party of austerity - e.g. rationing.
