Applying theories of personality: recruitment and selection
Psychometric
testing (personality tests) is therefore most often used to help companies assess candidates
a number of techniques are used in the selection process. These will most commonly include a CV, references, and aptitude tests to measure specific skills, but the personality of a candidate is also very important
with the addition of an
idiographic
approach of some sort (most commonly an interview).
Personality assessments need to meet two criteris:
Reliability
“the degree to which an assessment delivers consistent results when repeated”
Predictive Validity
how good an assessment is at predicting someone’s job performance
Limitations of personality tests
studies by Pilbeam and Corbridge (2006, p.173) have shown that the results for personality assessments show a low predictive validity (30% to 40%), which can drop to 15% for some self-administered tests (Reilly and Chao, 1982, p.32).
Combining nomothetic and idiographic approaches
Unconscious Bias in recruitment
The concept of fit in the context of recruitment
There are different forms of fit
Person-job fit
Person-job fit is the fit between a person’s ability and the demands of the job, as well as the fit between a person’s desires and motivations and the attributes and rewards of a job.
According to Edwards (1991), person-job fit is composed of three elements:
congruence
fit: the person and their post (job) have similar basic features
needs-supplies
fit: the return the post provides can meet the employee’s demands and expectations
demands-abilities
fit: the knowledge, skills and abilities of the employee meet their job requirements.
Person-group fit
Person-group fit is concerned with the way a person fits in with a workgroup’s styles, skills and objectives.
Person-organisation fit
Person-organisation fit is the fit between a person’s personality, beliefs and values, and the norms, values and culture of an organisation.
Person-vocation fit
Person-vocation fit is the fit between a person’s interests, abilities, values and personality and a particular activity sector or profession.
