The Fundamental Unit of Life
Osmosis
The movement of water across the plasma membrane is also affected by the amount of substance dissolved in water.
Hypotonic Solution: When the medium surrounding the cell is higher water concentration than the cell, the cell will gain water and swells up.
Isotonic Solution: When the medium surrounding the cell is equal to the cell, there is no movement and the cell remains the same
Hypertonic Solution: When the medium surrounding the cell is less than the cell, the cell loses water and shrinks
Chromosomes
Rod Shaped structures
It Contains info for inheritance of characters in the form of DNA
Chromosomes are composed of DNA and Proteins.
DNA molecules contain the necessary info for constructing and organising cells
Functional segments of DNA are called Genes
When a cell doesnt divide, the DNA is present as Chromatin material
Endocytosis
The flexibility of the cell membrane enables the cell to engulf the food and other material from its external enviroment
Plasmolysis
When a living plant cell loses water through osmosis there is a shrinkage of the contents of the cell away from the cell wall. This phenomenon is known as Plasmolysis
Fact
Cell Wall withstands very dilute hypotonic media without bursting. In such a media cell takes water by osmosis. The cell swells building up pressure against cell wall. The wall exerts an equal pressure agaisnt the swollen cell
