The Blood
29 August
What does it do?
Transport gases, nutrients, electrolytes, vitamins, hormones, lipids, and wastes.
Homeostatis (regulation)
- Temperature
- pH, ion concentrations and osmolality.
- Hormones, glands to organs
Hemostasis (repair)
- Prevent blood loss and tissue repair.
- Platelets and coagulation
Made up of:
Plasma
Albumins (60%)
Major contributors to osmotic pressure of plasma; transport lipids, steroid hormones
Globulins (35%)
Transport ions, hormones,
lipids; immune function
-
Regulatory proteins (<1%)
Enzymes, proenzymes,
hormones
Red Blood Cells, or Erythrocytes
Essential Values
Hematocrit: Percentage of blood volume occupied by packed RBCs
40-54% (males) 37-47% (females)
Hemoglobin: oxygen carrying capacity of RBCs
14-17 (males) 12-16 (females) Hb/dL
Red Cell Count could measured in cells/microliter or milliliter, but numbers remain the same
4.5-6.5 (males)
3.9-5.6 (females)
Hemoglobin
- Made up of Heme part and Globin part
- 4 globin chains, each contains 1 heme molecule
- 1 heme molecule carries 1 oxygen molecule
- 1 hemoglobin hence contains 4 oxygen molecules
Heme
- Pigment complex, 1 iron (Fe):1 O2 molecule
Globin
- 4 folded polypeptide chains, made up of 2 alpha + 2 beta chains (subunits), and each chain
contains a single heme molecule
Functions
- Transport respiratory gases
- Hemoglobin, to transport oxygen
- Carbonic anhydrase, convert CO2 in blood into bicarbonate (HCO3 ), to keep balanced pH
Appearance and Characteristics
- Biconcave
- Diameter: 7.5 μm
- Thickness: 2.5 – 0.5 μm
- No nucleus & organelles
- Lifespan of 100-120 days
-
Recycling
Aged and damaged cells engulfed by liver, spleen and bone marrow
- Globin goes to blood as amino acid
- Heme breaks down into Bilirubin, then secreted into intestines and excreted in faeces
-
-
Types
- A, contains anti B antibodies
- B, contains anti A antibodies
- AB, neither
- O, contains both anti A and anti B
Rhesus
Donor / Receiver table
- 0 minus is universal donor
- AB plus can only receive AB plus
- 8% of body weight
- 5-6L in men & 4.5-5.5L in women
