definition
This is a condition of the discs between vertebrae with loss of cushioning, fragmentation and herniation related to ageing.
Clinical manifestation
Burning sensation in the muscle
Aching and stiffness of joint
Irregular sleep disturbance
Back pain
Pain worsens with movement
Muscle twitches
Pathophysiology
People lose bone mass or density as they age, especial women after menopause
Bones lose calcium and other minerals
In the spine, vertebrae discs gradually lose fluid and become thinner
The foot aches becomes less pronounced, making a slightly loss of height
Fluid in the joints(synovial) decrease, making joint stiffer and loss flexibility
Normal aging changes in nervous system cause muscle become rigid & lose tone

Administer analgesic medication and instruct patient to perform non drug measures to relieve pain
patient placed on bed with rails to avoid falling and encourage patient to ask for help
instruct the patient to usually take diet rich in protein and calcium for bone formation
provide the patient with crutches for maintaining posture and balance
encourage the patient to perform orthopaedic exercises enhancing bowel movement and administer laxatives
