Active start
Age: males 0-6/ female 0-6
Objectives: Learning movements by playing fun games
In terms of physical development that the body undergoes consist of teeth growing and limbs starting to get strength. For emotional development in this stage is properly the most important phase as this is where you are told how to behave and how to play and work with others and where you should develop a positive self esteem. Cognitive development is key as it is the process involving thought and perception.
Fundamentals
Age: males 6-9/ females 6-8
Objectives: learning the fundamentals of all movement skills such as running and jumping.
Physical development in the fundamental stage the body continues to get stronger, weight and height starts to show and increase. Emotional development continues as this is when you are in primary and you start learning how to work well with others which in the end will help you become more of a team player which also helps your overall development as a soccer player. For the cognitive development your brain develops in school which helps with decision making
Train to train
Age: males 12-16/ females 11-15
Objective: Build strength and continue to learn sport specific skills such as dribbling, heading and learning technique.
This is arguably the stage where your body undergoes the most physical developments as muscle starts to build as you start doing exercise with either light weights or just body weight. In terms of emotional development you would have your personality already which will definitely help you in the long run as your coaches will see what your attitude towards others are. For the cognitive development your thought speed and process will be improved which will help you on and off the field.
Learn to train
Age: males 9-12/ females 8-11
Objective: learning sports skills and to build overall sports skills such as kicking and throwing.
Physical development in this stage is quite similar to the previous as your body continues to grow in weight and height. For the emotional development your personality starts to show if you are a leader or a team player and you start to learn what you bring to your team. Cognitive development shows here as the soccer becomes a bit more tactical and it shows how well you do when given certain instructions.
Train to compete
Age: males 16-18/ females 15-17
Objectives: Focus on fitness preparation and position-specific skills such as positional awareness and decision making
The physical development in this stage will consists of muscle being built via working out in the gym with weights, resistance bands and body weight. The emotional development will start to be put under pressure as you might be under a lot of stress because of school which could negatively affect your mental health therefore your performance on the field. The cognitive development your awareness starts to show as the game becomes a lot more technical .
Train to win
Age: 18 years and older/ females 17 years and older
Objectives: Maximize fitness preparation and sport, individual and position specific skills as well as performance
Your body will continue to develop physically as your overall fitness will depend on whether you are playing professionally, semi pro or amateur as there is a difference in overall fitness between the different playing levels. By having your personality trait when going through the emotional development will be crucial here as your personality might have an effect on if your coach plays you or not. The result of your cognitive development will show in how quick your thought process is and your decision making and on being calm in pressure situations and having the composure to play in big games.
Active for life
Objectives: Retain athletes for coaching, administrations, coaching, etc
The physical, emotional and cognitive development will either decrease or stay the same when you are in this stage.
Sensitive period
Sensitive period is when the affects of experiences are particularly strong on a limited period of development.
Sensitive periods in soccer for fitness the soccer player will focus on endurance training which helps players perform at their best without getting tired as you wont perform well when you are struggling with fatigue.
During the sensitive period for speed the soccer players will focus on drills that improve your overall speed and acceleration.
