Causes of the 1905 Revolution in Russia
Military factors
Bloody Sunday
tensions had been building up in the Russian empire for years as the process of industrialisation
the Russians aimed to occupy the Korean peninsula itself.
strikes were illegal but still there were 17000 stoppages in 1894 and 90000 in 1904
attacks on landlords property increased in 1890s. Sometimes military resists played a part in leading these outbreaks
Political factors
The members of the zemvsta continued to press for moderate liberla reform
the most extreme members of this group formed the union of liberation
the union of Liberation demanded a fairily elected National Legislative assembly and they desired constitutiona monarchy
In the winter of 1904 the speakers attacked the government and demanded constitutional change
the radical socialist also increased in strenght
the SRs appealed to the peasants desire for more land, assassinating many prominent officials and organised the all russian peasant union
Economic factors
when a series od poor harvest between 1897 and 1901 the unemployment grew and industrial unrest increased
monetary crisis made it harder for Russia to negotiate foreign loans, while tax income at home declined.
Social Factors
By 1904, the economic downturn and harvest failure had brought unemployment, high food prices and disrupted electricity supplies in the city
Father Georgi Gapon organised a march to the winter Palace to present a petition to the Tsar. even if the march was supposed to be peaceful the police fired on the protestant (Bloody Sunday) and there were a lot of victims causing unrest. This event had serious consequences, two years of unrest, with none that stil believed in the power of the Tsar--> this soon escalated in a network of riots and the creation of the strike committee. The one in ST Petersburg was led by Leon Trotsky
The Tsar in August 1905 agreed to some constitutional change in order to split up the opposition. He guaranteed full civil liberties, a state Duma and constitutional Democracy.
Thanks to the revolt ot Father Georgi massive unrest generated the creation of unions of all the different social groups, which joined together the Unions of Unions
