Cultural Colonization: The colonial state power through cultural knowledge, activities, and institutions for education and media
If oralism was never imposed to our Deaf citizens, probably the US could be bilingual in ASL and spoken English. It could it be just as Martha's Vineyard.
Instead Oralism created a segregation and separation among the hearing and Deaf community.
Could acceptance from the hearing world towards the Deaf world made an impact in their history?
Gallaudet, Deaf President movement, Deaf teachers, French Banquets, Alice Cosgwell, Clerc, Sicard, Abbe.
Audism, sterilization, asylums, torture to cure deafness, could be avoided.
Oralism: Deaf people/students were forced to use their voice and not their hands to communicate. Learning was difficult, Deaf teachers were not available, students were behind in knowledge.
Oralism: punishment for Deaf citizens.
Cancel talking for talking people, how would you feel?
UK Deaf clubs: 3 levels, The missionaries had power.
Pub rebels: outcasted from the clubs. Conflicts raised from these clubs, they were divided. Some wanted to include the hearing, others were not so happy to become bigger, they wanted Deaf people only
Maintain Deafhood was the important issue.
In the UK they had BDA - British Deaf Association. In the US we have NAD - National Deaf Association.
BDA- was a political group
BSL - Very vocal. ASL not so vocal.
Americans are criticized for feeling American first and second for being Deaf
UK BSL - can care less about signing proper
ASL signers take more pride in their signing skills, that is important.
Hearing community cant explain Deaf culture, we cannot explain Deaf feelings. Same way Deaf community cannot explain hearing culture.
