METALS
Physical Properties of Metals
~Metal are malleable means it can be hammered into thin sheets.
~Being ductile – which means it can be drawn into a wire. Silver
is one of the most ductile metals
Able to conduct heat and electricity
Metals often have high melting and boiling points, but there are many exceptions to the melting point, like cesium, gallium, mercury, rubidium and tin which all have fairly low melting points. However, most boiling points are still quite high.
Most metals are silvery, although some like gold, cesium and copper are colored.
Examples of Metals:
Iron
Copper
Silver
Mercury
Lead
Aluminum
Chemical Properties of Metals
Metal + O2 ----> metal oxide
For example- 2mg +02 ----> 2mgO
2cu +O2 ---->2CuO
Metals react with water and produce a metal oxide and hydrogen gas. Metals
oxides that are soluble in water dissolve in it to further form metal hydroxide .
2 Na+ 2H2O →2NaOH+ H2+ heat
2K +2h20 → kOH + H2+ heat
Metal + dilute acid ----> salt + H2
Mg + 2HCL -----> MgCl2 + H2
Generally,metal oxides are basic in nature but some metal oxide such aluminium oxide , zinc oxide react with both acids as well as with bases to produce salt and water such oxides are called as Amphoteric oxide
Metals such as potassium and sodium react so vigorously that they catch fire it kept in the open . Hence , they are kept immersed in kerosene oil to avoid accidental fires
.
All metals except cu,au,ag,hg,pt react with metal to produce salt and hydrogen gas.
H2 gas is not evolved when metal is reacted with nitric acid {HNO3} as its a strong oxidizing agent.It oxidizes H2 to H2O and itself get reduced to any of the nitrogen oxide.
But when Mg or Mn is reacted with very diluted HNO3 then H2 is evolved
.
Reaction of Salt with Metal.... In this case metal A which is more reactive than metal B to give salt of metal A + Metal B
Reaction : Metal a+salt solution of metal B ----> salt solution of A + metal B
