Culture Talking
- People within a culture expressing it to others and themselves.
Since the beginning hearing people have been telling the stories of Deaf people. This led to bitterness and more Deaf people telling their own stories
Writing as a Deaf author was for the most part producing stories of overcoming adversity despite being deaf. This left many other forms of creative expression to be constrained
Private and Public Expression
- We rely on private expressions to go public in order to talk culture. However there are many pressures to keep Deaf culture private.
Feeling resentment about hearing people wanting to learn ASL when they never cared before.
Having to "play nice" and appease hearing people by suppressing their pride
Skepticism about why hearing people want to learn ASL
Creating Deaf Culture Artifacts
- In order to prove Deaf culture was really a culture, the public wanted evidence in the form of artifacts created by the culture.
ASL!
Of course ASL was the main production out of Deaf Culture but this was not enough in the eyes of society
Poets such as Dorothy Miles, Ella Lentz and Clayton Valli were considered the highest examples of Deaf art but there was confusion about whether or not art that didn't use ASL should be considered Deaf art
Deaf research and literature was hard to come by while trying to prove the validity of Deaf culture. Few books or educational films existed which made introducing ASL into schools more difficult
What can we do to preserve Deaf Culture?
Listen to and respect the people inside the culture
Encourage Deaf artists to create art that expresses whatever they wish to say for themselves and not others
Circulate and accelerate the culture rather than try to prove anything
