Summative assessments are used to evaluate student learning, skill acquisition, and academic achievement at the end of an instructional period like a unit, course or school year. Summative assessments are almost always formally graded and often heavily weighted. (LMS)

Formative assessments are used to help teachers understand students while they teach by monitoring student learning to provide ongoing feedback. They can usually help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work.
