Definition
Impairment or loss of memory due to drugs
Clinical manifestation
Feeling withdrawal when not using substance
Using drugs/alcohol even in risky situations
Inability to control substance abuse
Intense cravings for a drug/alcohol
Requiring more and more of substance to get same effect
Risk factors
First experimenting with drugs /alcohol at young age
Having mental illness especially if untreated
Family history of substance misuse and addiction
Peer pressure from people using drugs
An unstable home life
Using drugs that are highly addictive e.g opioids
Causes
Substance abuse e.g alcohol or drugs
General anasthesia e.g benzadiazepines or sedatives
Brain damage from drug use
Pathophysiology
Loss of memory due to drugs
Drug-induced memory loss is typically anterograde
The inability to creat new memories for period of time
Memory loss affect are generally transient
It's limited to short term memory
