- - - - Promotes peace and stability - This political and military alliance was formed to promote the stability of the North Atlantic area and to safeguard the freedom of its peoples, based on the principles of democracy, individual liberty and the rule of law.
      - Protection for allies - They support nations with collective security, crisis management, and collective defense. Nato's founding treaty puts collective defense at its core, stating that "an attack on one Ally is considered as an attack against all." (Article 5).
      - Promotes democracy - When NATO was established, it pledged to promote democratic principles. "a functioning democracy based on a market economy, fair treatment of minority populations and a commitment to resolve conflicts peacefully" are among its requirements for potential new allies.
