PROFICIENCY TEST

2 types

Progress test
use well-defined short-term objectives

DIAGNOSTIC TESTS
identify students’ strengths and weaknesses -> what further teaching is necessary
ex:
one’s own designed
existing proficiency test
samples of students’ work (speaking and writing)
PLACEMENT TEST
place students at
the stage of the teaching program most
appropriate to their abilities
DIRECT / INDIRECT TESTING
Direct testing
ex: ask candidates to write letters
(want to measure ability to write letter)
easier -> productive skills (writing/speaking)
perform precisely the skills
which we wish to measure
Ad: straightforward, helpful backwash
Disad: limited to a small sample of tasks
Indirect testing
Measures the abilities which underlie the skills in which we
interested in
ex: Toefl
Semi-direct
Speaking tests where candidates respond to tape-recorded
stimuli
