What’s the most flavoursome and healthiest tea?
Tea making process
How are tea leaves/tea bags made?
Comes from the Camellia sinensis plant
Herbal infusions create different flavours
Tea leaves and buds are harvested and dried
Oxidisation is used in the tea making process
Different teas require different levels of oxidisation
The tea leaves go through four stages: withering, rolling, oxidation and drying.
How is drinkable tea made?
Tea bag/leaves are placed into a cup
Hot water is poured over tea in the cup
After hot water is added, tea is left to brew for varying amounts of time depending on strength preference
Other ingredients such as milk and sugar can be added for taste preference
Flavours/Types of Tea
Berry Tea/Fruit Tea
Herbal Tea
White Tea
Black Tea
Jasmine Tea
Green Tea
Peppermint Tea
Dark Tea
What makes tea 'healthy'
Vitamins
A vitamin is an organic molecule that is an essential micronutrient that an organism needs in small quantities for the proper functioning of its metabolism. Essential nutrients cannot be synthesized in the organism, either at all or not in sufficient quantities, and therefore must be obtained through the diet.
Minerals
In the context of nutrition, a mineral is a chemical element required as an essential nutrient by organisms to perform functions necessary for life.
Boost immune system
High in antioxidants, and a great source of hydration
Fight off inflammation
They contain powerful plant compounds or phytochemicals that can prevent oxidative damage to your cells and reduce inflammation. Tea has antioxidants called catechins, which reduce inflammation
Polyphenols, catechins and epicatechins
Beneficial effects against several pathological diseases including cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Work as strong anti-oxidants
Hydration
Contains water which is the best source of hydration
Tannins
Tannins are a group of compounds found in tea. They are known for their distinct flavor and interesting chemical properties and may also provide health benefit
Possible Variables
Type of Tea
Could use different types of tea to determine which is the strongest/most flavoursome and healthiest
Temperature
Varied temperature of tea to determine most ideal period of time in particular temperature to create the most flavoursome and health beneficial tea
Strength of Tea (concentration ratio of water to tea)
Vary the brewing time of the same type of tea. Different strengths could determine which time is most ideal to create a tea with the most health benefits
Experiment ideas
Use 3 different types of tea. Have the same brewing time and water temperature. Determine which has the strongest concentration through titration, determining the most flavoursome/strongest tea. Research which is healhtiest then back up by data
Use the same type of tea but different amounts of tea/water to create varying concentrations. Through titration, determine the strongest/most flavoursome tea based on the concentration. Determine which concentration is the healthiest.
Use the same type of tea but varying temperatures of water. Research optimal brewing time for a specific type of tea, and the ideal temperature. Measure ideal temperature plus other temperautres on a scale below and high. Brew tea for the same amount of time. Measure concentration through titration to determine the strongest/most flavoursome tea. Research healthiest tea and using data collected in practical, decide the most beneficial concentration of tea based on results.
What is tea?
Tea is an aromatic beverage prepared by pouring hot or boiling water over cured or fresh leaves of Camellia sinensis, an evergreen shrub native to East Asia which probably originated in the borderlands of southwestern China and northern Burma.
