3 - Good health and well-being: My client does not play any sports, so the product should provide an effective and convenient method of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Skateboarding helps develop physical endurance, flexibility, and coordination and burns calories. Furthermore, it is conducive to reducing risks of health problems including high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and coronary heart disease. Also, skateboarding is considered an effective means of stress relief.

13 - Climate change: Many means of transportation releases large amounts of carbon dioxide, which builds up greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and is harmful to the environment, increasing the global temperature. Subsequently, this causes issues such as rising sea levels, animals losing their habitats, increased frequency of extreme weather and natural disasters, increased droughts, and loss of species. Skateboarding doesn't release carbon emissions, so if it is manufactured using environmentally-friendly materials and processes, it would be a sustainable means of commuting.

I could possibly use a laser cutter to cut out a pattern on the grip tape.

Skateboarding avoids carbon emissions - The greenhouse gas effect: Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas, meaning that visible light and shorter wave radiation can pass through them. As these greenhouse gases build up in the atmosphere, they prevent heat from the ground from escaping, which raises the global temperature. This eventually leads to global warming and climate change, which is
a critical global issue because it poses a significant threat to all forms of life on Earth.

Nicole Luk

Basic information

She lives near her school (ISF) and normally walks back home. A skateboard would shorten her commuting time.

She takes public transportation sometimes (mostly minibus).

A skateboard would be helpful to her in travelling the distance between the point where she gets off the minibus and her final destination.

Using skateboarding as a means of commuting would be a good form of passive exercise.

Facts

Manufacturing Methods

Laser cutting: I can use a laser cutter to engrave patterns in the product, or to cut out a pattern on the grip tape.

Vacuum lamination: This can be used to shape the skateboard which would strengthen it, give the rider more control and allowing the rider to put more pressure on the skateboard.

Sanding: A belt sander, sanding files, and sanding blocks can all be used to smoothen the edges of the product.

Layering: To add thickness to the skateboard, I will layer it to ensure safety and avoid snapping.

Painting or drawing: These are possible methods that I can use to decorate the product according to my client's needs.

There are only approximately 3,000 skateboarders in Hong Kong, which translates to around 0.04% of the population.

The Centre for Health Protection states that, in 2018-2019, approximately one in six adults (17%) in Hong Kong had an inadequate amount of physical activity (based on the recommendation of the World Health Organisation). This number was 13% higher than in 2014-2015. Thus, it can be seen that the situation is worsening. With regards to youth, more than 90% of primary and secondary students were unable to meet the WHO's recommendation of minimum physical activity per day.

With the COVID pandemic, fitness levels have greatly decreased.
With COVID and the stressful homework from school,

According to UC Davis, skateboarding is 2-4 times faster than walking.

Results from a study conducted by FitBit show that physical activity has rapidly decreased since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Skateboarding can not only help a person arrive to the final destination at a faster pace, but also simultaneously burn calories, improve physical endurance, flexibility and coordination.

I will make the wheel of my product more smooth. Assuming that the same amount of force is exerted, an object with less mass would move at a faster speed than an object with more mass. Reducing the amount of friction on an object would also help it to move more quickly. Thus, a lighter product with a smooth surface would be able to move with minimal energy.

Many public transportation methods (such as MTR and buses) cannot arrive directly at the final destination. Thus, the individual would still have to travel for a certain distance.

Other possible solutions: roller skates, bikes, scooters...

An ISF student who would like a more efficient and environmentally-friendly way of commuting between short distances whilst utilizing this time to exercise.

Physical inactivity can cause many problems, such as increasing the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer.

Adequate fitness can improve mental health and cognitive performance and decrease the risk of developing the aforementioned health conditions.
