How Aluminium is made
Bauxite mining
Alumina Production
Crushing
Digestion
-
The sodium aluminate solution is stirred in
precipitators for days to eventually pure alumina or Aluminium oxide alsettles at the bottom.
-
The ore is loaded into atoclaves and treated with lime caustic soda. Aluminium oxide appears in the resulting slurry, while all the admixtures settle to the bottom as red mud.
-
Brauxite is then crushed and dried in special mills mixed with a bit of water. This makes a thick liquid that is collected in special containers and heated to remove most of the silicon present in bauxites.
-
The aluminium production process starts woth the mining of bauxites, an aluminium rich mineral in the form of aluminium hydroxide. About 90% of global bauxite supply is found in tropical areas.
-
Most bauxite mines are found in West africa, South africa, india and Australia. Mainly tropical regions.
