Book Nine
Odysseus
After Odysseus and his men leave Troy they are blown off course to the island of Ismarus where the Scones live. They sacked the town and killed the men, and stole the women. While they were drunk, the Cicones called for help and Odysseus and his men were overpowered and forced off the island. After visiting the Lotus-Eaters, they land on Polyphemus' Island. He traps them in his cave and eats the men. Then, he gives the cyclops some DELICIOUS WINE and the cyclops offers to eat him last. Odysseus tells him that hs name is Noman. After Polyphemus is very drunk Odysseus stabs a giant stick in his eye. Polyphemus calls for help but his friends think he is ill.
Nonhuman Characters
Polyphemus (cyclops)
Is a shepherding cyclops that is very nasty. He locks Odysseus and his men in his cave and eats them two by two. He is blinded and tricked by Odysseus.

The Lotus-Eaters
Are humans that are under the spell of a magical lotus fruit. Some of Odysseus' men try the fruit and never want to leave. They forget about the destination.

Nonhuman Characters
Circe
Turns Odysseus' men into pigs. She is shocked when Odysseus is not bewitched by her spell. Tells Odysseus to go to the underworld and get advise from the spirit of the prophet Tiresias.

Foreign Characters
Aeolus
Agrees to help Odysseus return home but when Odysseus' men misuse the gifts he is angered and sends Odysseus away.
Odysseus
Is nearly home and takes a nap. His men open the bags of wind, gifts given to him by Aeolus, and their boat is pushed back to Aeolus' Island. After seven days they reach Laestrygonia, and almost all his men are killed, Only one ship remains. When their boat reaches Circe's island he kills an stag and divides the men into to groups. One that he will command and the other for Eurylochus to command. Goes back to Circe's house to save his men. On the way meets Hermes who gives him a magical plant that will protect him.
Eurylochus
Eurylochus' men are invited into Circe's palace and are turned into pigs. Eurymachus suspects trickery and stays behind. When he sees what happens to the men he runs back to tell Odysseus

Book Three
Characters from Ithaka
Telemachus
Arrives on the shores of Pylos. He is a young man who feels awkward making speeches to elders. He states his case at dinner, and asks about his father.
Gods and Goddesses
Athena
Disguised as Mentor reassures Telemachus and advises that he not be shy. Thanks King Nestor, and assures him he must not host all of the men. She then reveals herself as a goddess and flies away.
Foreign Characters
Lord Nestor
Is the ruler of Pylos. Tells Telemachus how they suffered during the Trojan war. Says that he and Odysseus always agreed, and that he is sympathetic for the situation with the suitors but since Athena favors Odysseus so much he presumes that Odysseus is still alive. Offers Odysseus to sleep in his palace that night. Sends him off with his son Pisistratus.
Book Four
Characters from Ithaka
Telemachus
Asks Menelaus if he has news of his father. Leaves, and comes up with a clever solution for what gift he shall receive.

Foreign Characters
King Menelaus
Is the king of Sparta. Welcomes Telemachus and Pisistratus into his home. He tells them that after the Trojan war the men he misses the most are his brother, Agamemnon, and Odysseus. He feels for poor Telemachus who was just an infant when his father left. This makes Telemachus cry. Tells Telemachus a very long story about a sea god who they captured and made help him and his men get off an island and tell them about Odysseus. He gives the news that Odysseus is still alive.
Helen
Is Menelaus' wife. Notices a resemblance to Odysseus in Telemachus. She also gives everyone a magical drug.

Book Six
Foreign Characters
Nausicaa
Is the princess of Phaeacia. Does her laundry in the river and then plays ball with the girls. She tells Odysseus exactly what to do to please her father and the village.

Gods and Goddesses
Athena
Comes to Nausicaa in her sleep and tells her to do her laundry. she does this so that Odysseus will have a guide on this island.
Odysseus
Is woken by the girls screams as they play ball and speaks to Nausicaa. He bathes, and is fed and clothed. He does what Nausicaa advises and goes to the temple of Athena to pray.
Book seven

Athena
Covers Odysseus in a magical mist so the townspeople do not see him. Disguises herself as a small child and leads Odysseus to the palace. She tells him the family history of the royals.
Odysseus
Sets out with the little girl and begs for help at the palace. He tells the King and Queen of his journey and how he ended up in Phaeacia.
Book Eight
Foreign Characters
Alcinous
Calls a feast to honor the visitor. When he sees that Odysseus is upset by the bards song, he suggests that they all go and play sports to show their guest how athletic the Phaeacians are. Later, he once again sees Odysseus weeping over the bards songs of Troy and asks him who he is.
Demodocus
Is a bard favored by Muse. He begins the feast by singing of Odysseus and Achilles arguments, but stops when Alcinous tells him to stop. After the sports he sings about an affair between Aphrodite and Ares, and a trap set to catch them. This song Odysseus enjoys. For his final song of the night Demodocus sings about the Trojan horse. This song brings Odysseus to tears.

Euryalus
Taunts Odysseus,saying he is not one to participate in sports.
Odysseus
When Euryalus rudely mocks him he picks up a very heavy discus and hurls it farther than anyone else's. He then makes a long but humble speech about Euryalus' rude behavior and his own athletic ability. He receives many expensive gifts and a promise of a fine boat and many men to help him sail home.
Gods and Goddesses
Athena
Pours charm over Odysseus so he will appear godlike to the Phaeacian council. When Odysseus throws the discus far she congratulates him in disguise.
Book One
Characters from Ithaka

Telemachus
Meets Athena dressed as a beggar and invites her inside. Asks her if she knows his father and whether he is alive or not. Tells her he suspects Odysseus is dead, and that maybe he should let one of the suitors marry Penelope, his mother. Agrees to the idea of traveling around and asking for information about his father.
Suitors
The suitors are rude men living in Odysseus' home, eating all the food, and trying to court Penelope.

Gods and Goddesses
Zeus
Begins by talking about Agamemnon and Aegisthus. Says that they should come up with a plan to bring Odysseus home and says he likes Odysseus.
Athena
Comes up with a plan to bring Odysseus home. She dresses up as Mentes and advises that Telemachus travel through Greece and try to find out if his father is alive. If so, he will put up with the suitors one more year, if not, he will allow his mother to remarry.
Book Two
Characters from Ithaka
Telemachus
Calls a council meeting and tells them of the terrible suitors. He eventually convinces them to let him take a ship and twenty men to Sparta and Pylos to find news about his father.
Antinous (suitor)
Tells Odysseus he is a pitiful whiny child, and that his mother must marry one of them because his father is dead.
Halitherses
Is an elder who, after Zeus sends his eagles, predicts that Odysseus will return home on his twentieth year away. Since he is an old friend of Odysseus he is chosen alongside Mentor to guide Telemachus on his journey

Mentor
Is an old friend of Odysseus and stands up for Telemachus. He is chosen to help guide Telemachus on his journey.
Eurycleia
When she hears about Telemachus' journey she cries and begs him not to go, for surely something will go wrong
Gods and Goddesses
Athena
Disguises herself as Telemachus and goes to town to gather men and the finest ship, while the real Odysseus goes back to the palace.

Book Five
Odysseus
Works hard to make a boat once he hears he is being let free. He sails off, never sleeping, determined to reach home. Unfortunately Poseidon sees his raft and blows a giant storm upon his boat. Luckily he is rescued by Ino and Athena, and eventually reaches an island where he swims up a river, climbs into some bushes and falls sound asleep.

Athena
Hold a council and asks that gods please help Odysseus. She also helps Odysseus survive when he is shipwrecked and lost.

Is the white goddess. Lends him a scarf that will make him immortal and tells him how to reach Phaeacia.
