If pushed too far, can open-mindedness itself become restrictive? Discuss with reference to two areas of knowledge
Key Terms
Restrictive: Interpreted as restrictive to growth. Growth in terms of a society and individual mindsets. In this case, restrictive is defined as the inability to make progress, or express oneself freely.
Open-mindedness: In the context of this prompt implies acceptance of knowledge. Acceptance of other's work ass well as agreement with the basis of the mentioned argument, etc.
Pushed too far: Implies that people are too open minded. More than they should be? What is the normal level of open-mindedness and how does one define that?
TOK concepts
Interpretation
Connected to the concept of values, interpretation is also up to the individual. When it comes to open mindedness, each individual has their own interpretation of what they believe is justified and what is not. For art specifically, everyone has their own interpretations and thus varying levels of open-mindednessss
Perspectives
Similar to interpretations, everyone has their own perspectives and thus their own level of open-mindedness. Furthermore, what I consider open-minded may not be accepting enough to someone else, thus different perspectives play a huge role in the prompt.
Values
Open-mindedness depends on the individual. As the prompt states, 'if pushed too far' implying there are different levels to 'open mindedness'. This of course depends on the individual and is heavily influenced by their beliefs and values. For instance, a skeptic may be more open minded when it comes to certain hypothetical theories due to their mindset as opposed to someone that believes in concrete evidence.
Responsibility
In the area of knowledge of The Arts, artists hold a lot of responsibility in creating art and influencing the minds of the viewers. For instance, when Duchamp made the decision of displaying his artwork "fountain" he took on the responsibility of getting viewers to question their perception of art for years to come. They have the platform to showcase whatever they please, and thus hold a huge responsibility.
