        Maddie's independence and bravery
        
        "Maddie held on" to her bike even when one of the Youths "grabbed the handlebar with his own big fists". She did not back down and was unapologetic for own and riding a bike no matter what insults were thrown at her.
        
        Maddie was in a doubly compromised position as a female, and especially since she was Jewish. Yet, she did not back down. This scene portrays Maddie as unafraid and not easily daunted as she stands her ground despite the danger of being outnumbered and treated with unjust aggression.
        
        Subverting gender stereotypes with a determination to carve out her own path
        
        When she accidentally bumped into them, the Fascist thugs "looked Maddie up and down gleefully, pretty sure she would be easy bait." They bullied her for owning a bike as a girl with taunts like "What's a lass like you need with a big toy like this?" and making snarky comments like "Nice legs!"
        
        Seeing Maddie's fearlessness in dangerous situations such as this compels readers to support Maddie's journey to carve out her own path, undermining gender stereotypes, and achieve her dream of becoming a pilot.
    - - Act of Bravery
        
        "That slip of a lass’ll never shift that shell" said the male gunner. But "Maddie wasn’t listening. She was reckoning" and she readied the gun"with strength that she later couldn’t explain"
        
        Even when she fired the gun, Maddie was "doggedly coping with her own private hell of rational or irrational fear (of gunfire)". This shows her willpower to overcome her fears while proving the gunner wrong.
        
        This gives us a sense of empowerment and compels us to support Maddie. She physically had less strength than the male gunner, but ignored his stereotyping and got the job done.
      - Vulnerability
        
        Maddie "felt as though she were at the eye of a tropical storm. The still point of the turning world."
        
        Maddie was overwhelmed with the chaos that descended with the air-raid attack. Feeling as though she were the "still point" shows how she froze in that situation. The eye of a storm is actually the calmest area, so we can infer that this imagery reflects the frantic movement around her while she is caught off-guard and does not respond immediately.
        
        This moment of vulnerability allows us to sympathise with Maddie as we see how she is prone to moments of weakness as we are.

        She becomes a spy for the Resistance, which signals the shift of her work from passive resistance to active resistance. As a pilot, she ferried agents to and from their missions, but was never directly involved in the war effort the way Julie had been though she felt that "Just because [she] [didn't] do it [herself] [didn't] mean [she was] not responsible"(p.218)
