Blood dripping on Ettie's feet - death of morals and values - reminds us of how unpleasant their environment is.
Cheating between the Witch and Nelson - reminds us of the survival instinct that people have in the novel.
Ettie being able to read - She can do it, no one else can. The prophecy says the person who will help can read.

Setting
we discover about the supernatural world that exists within slum city in the form of a witch, Mistress Hadeda (the talking bird) and Nelson (the psychic). The witch makes/creates medicine that will make the orphan warden keep the children sleeping and quiet throughout the night.
