Types of poem
Limerick
Consists of five lines, has one stanza. The rhyme scheme is AABBA.
Haiku
Has 1 stanza and 3 lines, the rhyme scheme is ABA. The first and third line consists of 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables.
Ode
A poem that praises an individual, an idea or an event. Most common rhyme scheme is ABABCDECDE. Has 3-5 stanzas, and each stanza has ten lines.
Epic
Usually focus on the adventures of a hero, written in formal, elevated, dignified style. Contains third person narration and an omniscient narrator.
Ballad
A lyric poem, consist of three main stanzas and one quatrain, The three first stanzas has 8 lines, while the quatrain is 4 lines. The rhyme scheme is ABABBCBC ABABBCBC ABABBCBC BCBC.
Sonnet
A poem has 14 lines and those 14 lines are divided into four subgroups, which makes it a quatrain. There are 10 syllables in each line and is phrased in an iambic pentameter. The rhyme scheme is ABAB CDCD EFEF GG.
Free Verse
Has no limitations rhythm, but has artistic expression.
Blank verse
A poem that have no fixed numbers of lines, no rhyme, but each lines has 10 syllables.
Elegy
A poem that is about death or loss. It has 4 lines (quatrains), and the rhyme scheme is ABAB. The lines are written in an iambic pentameter which each lines consist of 10 syllables.
Genres of poem
Narrative
A poem that tells a story, that consists, of characters, plot and settings.
Lyric
A poem that expresses strong emotions and strong thoughts of the poet, that can be published as a song.
Descriptive
A poem that describes the subject (object, animal, person, world, etc).
