- - - - Mentes advises Telemachus
        
        Mentes refuses gifts and promises to exchange gifts in the future. Athena reveals herself as a god when she exits through smoke.
  - - - Telemachus expels the suitors from his house, and admits his desire to become king.
- - - - Telemachus contacts Athena, who gives him instructions to get supplies for their journey.
        
        Telemachus gets the supplies and leaves with Athena to board the ship and begin their journey.
- - - - Next, Telemachus asks someone what happened to King Agamemnon and Menelaus. Lines 253-312.
        
        Telemachus stays the night with the generous hosts whilst Athena goes back to the ship.
        
        Telemachus sets off via land to talk to Menelaus with some sons after sacrificing to Athena.
        
        They spend the next night at a different home and continue on in the morning.
- - - - Helen (Clytemnestra's sister and Zeus' daughter) and Menelaus tell everyone a story of Odysseus and themselves during the Trojan War. Lines 241-289. This story suggests that Helen is trying to convince everyone she was always loyal to the Greeks, but Menelaus points out that she also tried to get the Greeks to call out from within the Trojan horse. This causes tension in their household.
        
        The next morning, Telemachus asks Menelaus about his father's fate and learns that after Menelaus got stranded on an island with his men while trying to make it home, he tricked a god into telling them how to get home, what happened to his brother, and of Odysseus and the other men's fate. This is when he learned that Odysseus was trapped on an island by Calypso.
        
        Telemachus accepts gifts but has to leave soon so as to not keep making the rest of his crew waiting in Pylos.
  - - - The suitors hide on an island to kill Telemachus.
  - - - While Penelope sleeps, Athena sent a woman to her in dreams who told her her son would come home. However, the phantom would not tell her if Odysseus is alive or dead.
- - - - Odysseus holds on to his raft. A nearby goddess sees him and decides to help him by giving him a scarf to tie around him for protection. The goddess, Ino, tells him to take off all clothes and swim, and he should make it to safety.
        
        Odysseus believes that it is a trick, but eventually follows her adivice.
        
        Odysseus sees land ahead but no way onto it besides dangerous rocks. Then he is swept through a river mouth and gets to a forest. He sleeps under two bushes.
- - - - Nausicaa explains that people would gossip and think badly of her is she were to be seen with Odysseus, so she tells him to first follow her and her mules with her slaves, then wait for her to get to her house. Then, he should find directions to her house. Then he should go to the Great Hall and embrace the knees of the queen, which will help him get home safely and happily.
- - - - Odysseus pleads with the queen to take him back home. The king and queen welcome him with food and lots of drink. The king plans to help Odysseus get home, but thinks he may be immortal. Odysseus convinces him he is human, and tells the room his story from washing up on Calypso's island to being sent away, to meeting their daughter to now.
        
        The king wants Odysseus to marry his daughter, but lets Odysseus decide.
        
        Odysseus goes to bed, and the next day they will celebrate and then take him home.

- - - - Alcinous served lots of food, and got the town's poet to come recite his songs. The poet got his sight traded for his gift with words.
        
        The men compete in sports and they begin to ask if Odysseus is good at sports. A prince taunts Odysseus until he gets very angry.
        
        Alcinous wishes to show off their amazing skill in other arts, and diffuses the situation.
        
        The poet tells them the story of Aphrodite taking Ares as her lover, and how Hephaestus caught them and shamed them for all the MALE gods to see.
        
        After, the dancing began, and Odysseus was very impressed.
        
        Nausicaa says her goodbye to Odysseus and reminds him to be thankful for her.

  - - - Odysseus is given many great gifts and is apologized to.
        
        Odysseus asks the poet to sing of the story of the Greeks at Troy, so he would know if the poet was blessed by the gods.
        
        Odysseus cries again.
- - - - Zeus' winds prolonged their journey, and once thy were on their way, a current took the crew to an Island where people ate lotuses. A few of the men went looking for the inhabitants of the island, and the Lotus-Eaters shared the fruit, but the fruit made the men forget about home and not want to leave. Odysseus brought them back to the group.
        
        Then they made it to the country of the Cyclopes. They are very uncivilized in Odysseus' eyes. Odysseus and his crew sail to a different island to explore and meet the Cyclopes. They went into a cave and ate around a fire.
        
        The Cyclops returned and once he saw them he did not care for Xenia and trapped them, and ate two men. The next morning he ate two more and left them in the cave, tapped by a huge rock.
        
        Odysseus makes a spear, tricks the Cyclops into drinking potent wine, and when the Cyclops passes out, he and the remaining men stabbed his eye, blinding him.
        
        When other Cyclopes came to check on him because of his screaming, he said that Noman (the name Odysseus said was his) was hurting him, so the Cyclops left.
        
        All the men hid on the bellies of sheep to get past the cyclops, and once the cyclops let the sheep out of the cave, they made their break for it, took the sheep, and made it back to their ship.

- - - - Next they got to Laestrygonia, where Odysseus sent some men to explore. They got to the king, but then all the Laestrygonians threw boulders at the ships and killed all of them but Odysseus' ship (which was moored away from this others).
        
        Next they got to the home of Circe, and half the crew went to meet her. They got turned into pigs. Odysseus went to investigate and got an antidote to the spell poison from Hermes. He resisted Circe's spells and used Hermes' advice of intimidating her to make her swear not to hurt him. She turned his friends back into humans, but more attractive. Next he brought the rest of his men up to Circe's and they stayed with her for a year.
        
        Circe fulfilled her oath to Odysseus and let them go, but with the command to contact a dead prophet named Tiresias.
        
        They begin their new quest.
- - - - Eventually the prophet Tiresias comes. He tells Odysseus that his future holds great suffering. He warns Odysseus to not kill any sheep or cows from the Island of Thrinacia, but tells him to kill all the suitors who invaded his home. Then he should journey out until the people do not recognize an oar, then sacrifice to Poseidon. Then, back at home, he should sacrifice a hecatomb to each god. Then he will die happy and old.
        
        The prophet leaves and Odysseus speaks with his mother. His mother tells him news of Penelope, Telemachus, his father, and her own death.
        
        Next, Persephone sent lots of women spirits and Odysseus talks to each in turn. One tells of a love affair with Poseidon that resulted in two sons. one who had two sons with Zeus, one who's love with Zeus resulted in Hercules, as well as Hercules' wife, Epicaste (who married her own son accidently), Chloris (a ruler of the Minyans), Leda, another women who had an affair with Poseidon, Phaedra, Procris, Ariadne, Maera, Clymene, and Eriphyle.
        
        Next Odysseus shares the tale of Kind Agamemnon's death, who he learned from Agamemnon's spirit. Also, Agamemnon sacrificed their daughter, and brought a woman slave home.
        
        Achilles wishes for news of his son and father. Odysseus does not know about his father but reassures him with the news that his son was brave in battle and did not get injured from the battle.

- - - - The group sails past Scylla and six of the best fighters get killed.
        
        Finally they make it to the island, but they are trapped by storms and run out of food. They fish etc., but eventually Odysseus goes away from the group to spray, but falls asleep and the rest of his crew kills a cow and eat it.
        
        Finally conditions allow for travel, but their ship gets destroyed and everyone but Odysseus gets tossed into the water. Odysseus gets sucked back to Scylla and Charybdis. He clings to the fig tree, and finally Charybdis spews her water, tossing him back into the water. Odysseus uses floating wood as a raft and floats to Calypso's island.
