Describe the four basic requirements of a reliable network.
Fault Tolerance
A computer system, electronic device, or network that is fault-tolerant can continue to function even when one or more of its components fail. Potential service outages caused by logical or software problems are also resolved through fault tolerance.
Scalability
The capacity of a system to adapt its performance and cost to changes in application and system processing demands is known as scalability.
Quality of Service (QoS).
The use of mechanisms or technologies that work on a network to manage traffic and guarantee the functioning of crucial applications with constrained network capacity is known as quality of service (QoS).
Security
Network security is a set of technologies that protects the usability and integrity of a company's infrastructure by preventing the entry or proliferation within a network of a wide variety of potential threats.
Describe how host devices can be used as clients servers or both
Server
Server is nothing but an application running in a device that provides/serves some services. For example Application providing Web Services, Email services and so on.
Clients
Clients are nothing but an application running in a device that requires these services to do their job. For eg Browsers (that require web services to process web pages), Thunderbird mail client (that require email services to fetch and send emails)
laptop must run some services , say Apache (a web server software). So what about client? Firefox browser via which you access the webpages is the client.
Server doesn't necessarily be a rack with bunch of hardwares. A simple device can be a server if it servers certain services to the client
WHAT IS NETWORK PROTOCOL?
an established set of rules that determine how data is transmitted between different devices in the same network
allows connected devices to communicate with each other, regardless of any differences in their internal processes, structure or design.
are implemented by hosts and networking devices in software, hardware or both
are viewed in terms of
layers
each higher level service depending on the functionality defined by the protocols shown in the lower levels
PROTOCOLS FOR SUCCESSFUL HUMAN COMMUNICATION
. Identification of sender and receiver
Grammar and sentence structure
Common language
Speed and timing of delivery
Agreed-upon medium or channel (face-to-face,
telephone, letter, photograph)
Appropriate communication mode (spoken, written,
illustrated, interactive or one-way)
ROLE OF PROTOCOLS
The process by which networking devices share information about
pathways with other networks
How and when error and system messages are passed between
devices
How the message is formatted or structured
The setup and termination of data transfer sessions
IMPORTANCE OF PROTOCOL
making sure the message gets to its destination properly,in entirety, and without distortion
helps in securing the data and checking also correcting errors
were created to allow computers to communicate in an organized manner without any room for misinterpretation
Define the computer network
Computer networking refers to interconnected computing devices that can exchange data and share resources with each other.
These networked devices use a system of rules, called communications protocols, to transmit information over physical or wireless technologies.
Describe the types of rules that are necessary to successfully communicate. a. Source or sender
Destination or receiver means the person for whom the source conveys the message through several medium.
Communication Channels. Communication channels can be categorized into three principal channels: (1) verbal, (2) written, and (3) non-verbal. Each of these communications channels have different strengths and weaknesses, and oftentimes we can use more than one channel at the same time.
explain how lans and wans interconnect to the internet
WANs interconnect LANs over wide geographical areas such as between cities, states, provinces, countries, or continents. WANs are usually administered by multiple service providers. WANs typically provide slower-speed links between LANs
Describe how networking technologies
are changing the home environment
Some of the newest home trends include Smart Home Technology. Smart home devices provide integration into compatible appliances, switches, outlets, and entertainment devices. Other devices allow the ability to communicate with the installed smart technology and lets users manipulate their environment through touch or voice commands. More devices are being released every year and fully automated smart homes are undoubtedly the end goal.
