3. Agriculture
Agriculture, forestry and fishing are part of Japanese culture. However, today they provide less than 2% of the population with work.
Before the mid-1800s, forestry, fishing, and other agriculture accounted for over 80% of the employment
One of the reasons for the decrease in agriculture is the booming economy of Japan. It has left farmers behind in income and technology.
The agricultural economy is highly subsidized and protected by the government. Part of this is related to how rare excellent agricultural land is in Japan. The main characteristic of Japanese agriculture is a lack of land surfaces; only about 15% of Japan’s land is useful for agriculture.
Currently, Japan imports almost 50% of its grain for humans. An exception to this is rice. About half of its food for livestock is also imported. Most of its meat is also imported.
