Role of infection prevention and control
General oversight
They are responsible for reducing and managing the spread of hospital acquired infections
Involves many different teams
BMS reporting results
Ward Staff
Infection Control team
Clinical scientists/medical staff
Example
VRE outbreak on a ward
Ward will be contacted by either the medical team/clinical scientists (or BMS if OOH)
Patient will have to be barrier nursed and isolated from other patients on that ward
Ensure appropriate hand washing facilities available
Rest of ward will be screened to ensure there is no further cases or cases that may be missed.
CDIF
This would require the patient to have their own toilet facilities and would require suitable hand washing as alcohol gel is ineffective. No screening but patients closely monitored.
This is all done so as to ensure that hospital infection rates are managed
Healthcare associated infections must be reported to UKHSA.
Increased rates of hospital acquired infections can incur costs on the trust
Must keep infection rates within targets
