HOW STRONG A CONTENDER FOR POWER WAS FASCISM
Had many assets such as half a million party members and a quarter million black shirts
Virtually controlled several regions
Their violence had helped suppress socialism and attract supporters among the elite
Also profited greatly off their contenders weaknesses
Unlike the liberal governments they had a strong sense of leadership in the face of major political and economic problems
The period between 1920 to 1922 is known as the collapse of the government
Liberal, socialist and catholic powers were unable to unite against the fascist threat
In July 1922 moderates tried to join in an anti fascist coalition but giolitti withheld his support and the plan collapsed
Liberal politicians were unable to put aside personal animosity and the plan didn't pan out
Socialist power had clearly peaked in 1920 and since then they had been plagued by growing unemployment and demoralisation due to fascist attacks
However if socialism had completely failed, fascism wouldn't have been able to rise to power the way it did
In August 1922 socialists called a legaritarian general strike to protest against the fascists
This collapsed after one day due to lack of support
However gave the fascists another excuse to point out socialist weaknesses
This does not mean thar fascism was not responsible for some disorder
It was divided on how to achieve power and many of the ras wished to seize it
Some favored d annunzio over mussolini and others wanted more fascist involvement
Mussolinis weak base in parliament cannot be forgotten here as he only had support with seven percent of the deputies
Had to use the threat of the ras to enforce his claims
