Vulvitis
It's the inflammation of the vulva
Clinical manifestations
Redness and swelling of the vulva
Unusual vaginal discharge
Small crankles in the skin of the vulva
Thick, asaly whitish patches on the vulva.
Diagnostic tests
Blood tests
Vulval swabs for culture and sensitivity
Urinalysis
Skin scraping in case of dermatitis.
Pathophysiology
It's caused by organisms like:
Staphylococci which infect hair follicles
Candida albicans
Spirochaetales infections
Sexual intercourse and contract a gonoccoci
Causes
Dryness
Injury
Allergic reaction
Skin abrasion
Risk factors
An underlying sexually transmited infection
Diabetes mellitus
Scabies
Post menopausal women due to lack of oestrogen
Dermatitis
Nursing intervention
Nursing diagnosis
Inflammation of the vulva may be related to staphylococci as evidenced by redness and swelling of the vulva.
Nursing management
Sitz bath with a 1:30 dilution of salon bid :
Antifungal, hydrocortisone and oestrogen creams may relieve symptoms.
Low dosage of steroids ointment may be applied.
Health education
Good personal hygiene should be emphasized
Wiping from front to back should be encouraged
Advise the patient to wear cotton underwear
Emphasize staying hydrated to dilute urine and reduce irritation.
