MENSTRUAL CYCLE
DEFINITION

occurs when the ovum is produced and not fertiised, if fertilized menstruation occurs and woman falls pregnant.
FOLLICULAR PHASE
FSH is produced by anterior pituitary gland stimulated by GnRH from the hypothalamus as the master gland.

Ovaries are stimulated by FSH to release oestrogen in high levels to prepare the endometrium for implntation.

LUTEAL PHASE

if frtilization does not occur, the follicular cells will shrink forming the corpus luteum.

If fertilization occurs the corpus luteum will produce oestrogen and progesterone in high levels, but it does not, progesterone leveles will drop.
if fertilisation does not take place, ovum together with compact layer of the endometrium wll be washed away thus leading to the menstruation.
after 5 to 7 days of menstruation, the cycle will start again.
OVARIAN PHASE

The chosen dominant follicle burst and releases the second oocyte to the ovarian site for fertilization.
