The story starts with Pip in the woods by his home, practising his knife fighting. Then, the following day, Pip and his stepfather, Samuel, gets robbed by Pigface and Weasel. They steal everything worth of value and trash the house. That night, Pip hatches a plan to go to London and confront Weasel for the money. So, in the night he sets off with only his knife and the clothes on his back. Pip reaches Mildmay at dawn the next day. He goes around asking for food but he gets barely anything. He continues on to London and arrives a few days later, starving from hunger and thirst. The first thing he notices about London is that it is HUGE. The second thing he notices is the smell. It is worse than the pigsty back home! He sleeps in a stinky alleyway and wakes up next morning. He asks around for the Bear Garden but ends up in the Globe, a theatre in London.
