Causes
Endometriosis. Tissue that acts similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus, most commonly on fallopian tubes, ovaries or the tissue lining your pelvis.

Adenomyosis. The tissue that lines your uterus begins to grow into the muscular walls of the uterus.

Pathophysiology
Dysmenorrhea is thought to be caused by the release of prostaglandins in the menstrual fluid, which causes uterine contractions and pain.
Vasopressin also may play a role by increasing uterine contractility and causing ischemic pain as a result of vasoconstriction.
