PATHOGENESIS

toxigenic start producing the diphteria toxin- inhibits synthesis of polypeptides in eukaryotes (most potent toxin)
-complete block all polypeptide synthesis -> result in cell death
PREVENTION & CONTROL
aims:
-limit distribution of toxigenic diphteria bacilli in population
-maintain as high a level of active immunization as possible
-
adults- toxoid boosters
toxigenic diphteria are not prevalent in the population to provide stimulus of subclinical infection
antitoxin declines with time, older persons have insufficient antitoxin to protect them against diphteria
Diphteria toxid + tetanus toxoid (Td) + acellular pertussis vaccine (DTaP) - immunization of children

CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
grayish pseudomembrane consist of fibrin, RBC, WBC are formed over the tonsils, pharynx, larynx.
if remove it, will result in bleeding
