Ban Lan Gan, Da Qing Ye and Qing Dai all come from the same plant; Isatis or Woad plant. Da Qing Ye is the leaf of the plant. Ban Lan Gen is the root. And Qing Dai is the processed form from the leaves and stems. Ban Lan Gen is pretty similar to Da Qing Ye, it is used to clear heat and fire toxicity, especially for redness in the throat, head and neck, and massive head febrile disorder. It can be used as a substitute for Da Qing Ye. Da Qing Ye typically is used for rashes and swollen sore throat from warm toxin. Ban Lan Gen is typically used for massive head febrile disorder. Qing Dai, compared to the other two, is also able to drain liver fire.
