Definition
It is a complete or partial pulling or tearing of the ligament at the joint
Clinical manifestations
Oedema
Pain
Limited movement
Discoloration
Local tenderness
Causes
Trauma in fall
Direct blows
Hyperextension
Pathophysiology
The rapture of ligaments and joint capsule can occur as a result of overstretching
Blood vessels also raptures and Bleeding can occur into the surrounding tissues
This result to Inflammatory reactions
Nursing care plan
Nursing Diagnosis
Altered comfort and activity intolerance related to pain from the ligament damage as verbalised the patient
Altered risk for tissue perfusion related to Inflammatory response to the injured tissue as evidence by swelling
Nursing management
Apply cold compress to stop bleeding
Advice the patient to rest the affected part and avoid weight bearing
Eelivate the affected part to ensure the venous drainage
Give analgesics as prescribed
Evaluation
Patient to verbalise no pain
Reduced swelling or oedema
Medical intervention
Ligament reconstruction surgery
Ligament repair
Prescribe analgesics
