STREPTOCOCCUS SPP. - Coggle Diagram
STREPTOCOCCUS SPP.
STRUCTURE & MORPHOLOGY
gram positive cocci arranged in pairs/ chain
catalase negative
facultatively anaerobic
Lancefield group- lack of significant strep. pathogens
A-H
K-V
A & B- significant strep. pathogens
STREPTOCOCCUS PYOGENES
(group A streptococcus): B-haemolytic
VIRULENCE FACTORS
M protein
destabilizes component, interfere opsonization and lysis
streptokinase
break down blood clots, enable s.pyogenes rapidly spread
deoxyribonucleases
depolymerize DNA release from dead cell in abscess
hyaluronic acid capsule
WBC may ignore bacteria camouflaged by this capsule which aids in its spread
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
pharyngitis
have fever, malaise, swollen lymph node, pus covering tonsils
scarlet fever
trigger diffuse rash spread across body
erysipelas
pus-producing lesions on exposed skin of face, arms, legs -> impetigo
DIAGNOSTIC LAB TEST
specimens
throat, swab, pus, blood obtained for culture
smears
smears of throat swab not confirmatory
bcs viridans strep have same appearance with group A streptococci
serology
ASO antibodies in resp. disease
anti-DNase B
anti-hyaluronidase antibodies in skin infection
STREPTOCOCCUS AGALACTIAE
(group B streptococcus) : B-haemolytic
