DIAGNOSTIC LAB TESTS
specimens
surface pus swab, pus/ aspirate from an abscess for testing
anterior nares are swabbed (determine nasal colonization)
smears
appear GRAM POSITIVE COCCI IN CLUSTERS
culture
grow readily under aerobic conditions
-37 degree cel
-colonies are surrounded by clear zones of haemolysis (beta-haemolytic) on blood agar
