Mecca was the capital of Islam (then, it changed to Damascus) Muhammad was born there.

5 Pillars
- Shahada, not other gods but Allah, declared it public
- Salat, prayed five times a day facing Mecca --- biggest mosque in the world
- Zakat, every Muslim is required to give part of their money to the poor people
- Sawm, they can not eat during the day, only through the night. If you have something wrong with your health, you are allowed to eat. They fast during daylight hours during one month called Ramadan.
- Hajj, once in a lifetime every Muslim goes to Mecca, there, you will be judged either if you are worthy or unworthy for being a Muslim.

Muhammad started in a monotheistic religion so he and his followers had to fight with the Quraysh.
The Quraysh were polytheistic (an arabic tribe) and had different volves from those of Islam.
four caliphs
- 661: Ali was murdered after marring Muhammad´s daughter (Fatima). IMPORTANT!

Muhammad succeed by the four caliphs (Khalifa or succesor in Arabia) Abu bark (632- 34 A.D), Umar (634- 44 AD), Uthman (644- 56 A.D) and Ali (656- 661 A.D).
The four caliphs expanded islam, while the had many issues to discuss.
